The story of Anas ibn Malik that his mom had told him made him realize how wonderful it was to do even small tasks with a willing heart. He no longer sighed “Ugh!” when his mom asked for help. Instead, he would smile and get to work.

But a new problem had come up this week. He had a falling out with his best friend, Ali, at school. It all started during a soccer game at recess. Omar hadn’t meant to trip Ali, but when the referee blew the whistle, Ali was on the ground and Omar’s team had just scored a goal. When Ali got up, he was furious. “You tripped me on purpose!” he yelled. No matter how much Omar said, “No, I didn’t!” Ali wouldn’t believe him. Since that day, they hadn’t spoken. Omar was very sad. He knew he was right, but he didn’t know how to convince Ali.

At dinner that evening, Omar couldn’t even finish his food. His dad noticed how down he was. “What’s wrong, champ?” he asked. Omar explained the problem with Ali. “He’s accusing me unfairly. I was just kicking the ball. But now he won’t talk to me,” he said, his voice trembling.

Omar’s Sadness Over the Argument

His dad thought for a moment. “You believe you were in the right, don’t you?” he asked. Omar nodded. “Then I’m going to tell you a story about a very special person. He was one of the greatest symbols of justice and courage. His name was Umar ibn al-Khattab.”

Omar’s eyes lit up. “My namesake?”

“Yes, your namesake,” his dad said with a smile. “Before he became a Muslim, Umar was known as a very strong and tough man. In fact, people were afraid of him. But after his heart was warmed by Islam, his strength became a tool for upholding justice. He became one of the Prophet’s most loyal friends and one of the most important leaders in Islam.”

His dad finished the last bite of his food and began the story. “The most defining quality of Umar ibn al-Khattab was his sense of justice. He treated everyone equally—whether they were rich or poor, strong or weak. His justice was so firm that people would come to him to solve their problems. One time, a Muslim man and a Jewish man came to him to settle a dispute between them. The Jewish man claimed the Muslim had wronged him. Umar listened to both sides and, in the end, decided that the Jewish man was right. He instructed the Muslim to abide by his decision.”

“What did the Muslim do?” Omar asked, full of curiosity.

Dad Shares the Story of Umar

“The Muslim man respected Umar’s decision and gave the Jewish man what was owed to him. That was the kind of justice Umar had. He was fair not only to people of his own faith but to everyone. If he or his family were ever in the wrong, justice would come first, before anything else.”

His dad continued. “One day, a man came to Umar. ‘O Leader of the Faithful,’ he said. ‘Your son unjustly took my property.’ Umar was very surprised. He immediately called his son and asked, ‘Did you take this man’s property?’ His son lowered his head and said yes. Without hesitation, Umar told his son that he was in the wrong and ordered him to return the property. He even disciplined his own son. He would never let his position or his family get in the way of justice.”

Umar’s Unwavering Justice (Muslim vs. Jew)

Umar’s Justice with His Son

Omar was amazed as he listened to his dad’s story. He thought about how honest and brave Umar was. He could even scold his own son for being unfair. Omar immediately thought of Ali. He still saw the incident in the soccer game as an injustice. Omar made a decision. “I have to be fair to Ali, too,” he thought. “Maybe I should try to see things from his point of view.”

The next morning, Omar was very excited on his way to school. During recess, he saw Ali and walked over to him. Ali frowned when he saw him. Omar gathered his courage and spoke. “Ali, I’m really sorry about what happened yesterday. I didn’t mean to do it, I promise. But I understand now that from your point of view, it looked like an unfair thing to do. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

Ali was surprised. “Really?” he asked. “But you did trip me.”

Omar said, “Yes, we were playing fast, and I didn’t do it on purpose, but I still accidentally hurt you. I’m sorry. If I were in your place, I would have been upset too.”

The tough look on Ali’s face softened. “I’m sorry too, Omar, for getting so angry without listening to you first.”

They both smiled. In that moment, it was as if all the ice between them had melted. They shook hands and continued the game together that day. Omar loved the feeling of peace he had inside. The story of Umar ibn al-Khattab had taught him not only to be just, but also how important it was to understand someone else’s feelings and to admit when you were wrong. Justice was like a light that shined not just when you were right, but when you were honest in the deepest part of your heart. And Omar knew he could carry that light with him.

Omar and Ali Reconcile

Omar had been feeling much better ever since he tidied up that mountain of toys last week.
